Rateau at the Gatehouse

Copy photograph of the front of the Gatehouse. Armand-Albert Rateau leans against the bridge parapet – this is the only known photograph of Rateau at Leeds Castle. Another figure walking through the Gatehouse archway in the background has been identified as Owen Little. Stamped A. A. Rateau, 17 Quai Conti, Paris VI, Tel. Danton 85 81.

The photographs in series PH5 are from a large, leather-bound album which appears to have been compiled by or for Lady Baillie c.1960. The album’s contents are wide-ranging, from views of the Castle and grounds to family weddings and christenings, and cover the period between the late 1920s to 1950s. It also includes copies of several original photographs by Rateau, some of which are in series PH15, while others are the only surviving copies in the collection.
